Please note that when rehearsals are scheduled at the theater, classes will not be held.
Attendance- Dance is a structured discipline that requires regular attendance. This responsibility is up to the individual. Students should arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before their scheduled class and depart promptly afterwards. Parents of students 8 years old and younger are required to come into the studio to pick up their child.
Attire - If students are dressed properly, they will look, feel, and act like dancers. All dancers must be neat in appearance and adhere to the dress code described with each class description.
Hair- Long hair needs to be off of the neck and face, ideally in a bun with hairpins and a hairnet; flowers and ribbons optional. Any hair longer than eye-level must be clipped back and off of the face.
All students should wear a cover up to and from the studio. Ballet slippers should never be worn outside. If you are in doubt that particular dance wear is permissible, ask first before purchasing.
In the event of a school cancellation due to inclement weather, we do not automatically follow the Fairfax County School System's closing schedule. If we decide to cancel, notification will be given either on this website or by email at least one hour prior to the start of class times.
If we cancel a class for any reason, make-up classes will generally be offered within two weeks of the cancellation. If the student cannot attend their regularly scheduled class, they may contact Mia on an individual basis to attend another class. Students will be allowed two make-up classes per semester. The best time to schedule a make-up lesson is during September-October and January-February when we are not preparing for performances. Additionally, there are generally three-four working rehearsals held during the year that may also substitute for make-up lessons.
For the privacy of all students, parents are asked to make prior arrangements with the instructor for class observation. Parent Observation Week is held in March.
A nominal fee is due before each performance to help with production costs. These fees are due Nov. 10th for The Nutcracker and March 10th for the spring show. Parents of dancers contribute their time and talent towards the large-scale benefit production of The Nutcracker. Two adult tickets are given to each family for the Nutcracker. In the spring, each family will receive tickets for two adults and the dancer's immediate siblings (ages 3 - 18) that reside with them. Costume information for the spring show is given out in January. These costumes are purcahsed by each family for their dancer(s).
Dance is a discipline that takes time, dedication, and practice to master. In addition, performances are built upon the commitment of individual dancers. The individual has the ability to impact the group as a whole.
For returning students a full school year (September - June) commitment is expected at time of registration.
New students to Mia Saunders Ballet may either register for the year, or opt for a one-month grace period on which to base their enrollment decision. After that time, you are to confirm your desire to enroll for the year which guarantees your place in the class.
Unsure if your child will want to join for one month or commit to the year? Please make prior arrangements with the Director to observe a class or take a single trial class.
